Safe Electrical Practices

Electrical workers must not become complacent when working with electricity!

The procedure applies to all electric work from 50 volts and above.

TWO JOURNEYMAN WIREMEN are required for work on systems 480 volts and higher in accordance with Article 3, Section 3.24 of the Inside Construction Agreement.

No employee shall work directly on energized parts/circuits unless it is infeasible (as defined by OSHA, 29 CFR. Section 1910.333) to shut the system down.

When it is infeasible to work on the circuit de-energized, qualified employees must use the proper Personal Protective Equipment supplied by the employer. Special insulated tools shall be used in conjunction with additional personal protective equipment to protect the employee performing the work.

Only qualified persons (this excludes Apprentices) may work on parts of equipment or circuits that are energized. Barriers and other means of guarding must be provided to prevent persons from coming in contact with energized parts while they are exposed.
