Standing Up for Our Rights

Brothers and Sisters,

As Americans, we hold dear the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and the right to vote. But for working people, there is another vital freedom: the right to organize and collectively bargain.

That right was protected in 1935 with the National Labor Relations Act, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It did not just permit unions it encouraged them, recognizing that organized labor is essential to a strong, fair society Later, President John F. Kennedy extended those rights to federal workers, helping generations of Americans build better lives and a thriving middle class.

But today, those hard-won rights are under threat.

In March, the President of the United States issued an executive order stripping collective bargaining rights from hundreds of thousands of federal employees including IBEW members working in naval shipyards, public power, and other federal roles. These are skilled, dedicated professionals who deserve the same rights and respect as any other worker.

This is not just a federal issue. History shows that when collective bargaining is weakened in one sector, all workers are at risk. We saw it in 1981 with the firing of air traffic controllers, and again in 2011 when Wisconsin gutted public-sector bargaining rights. The result? Union membership in Wisconsin has nearly halved.

So, if you think, “This doesn’t affect me I work in the private sector,” think again. When one group loses its voice, we all lose ground. As the old labor saying goes: An injury to one is an injury to all.

That is why IBEW Local 43 stands in solidarity with our federal union brothers and sisters. Their fight is our fight. These workers help keep our government running safely and efficiently. They deserve dignity, respect, and a voice on the job.

We have joined with the AFL-CIO and unions nationwide to demand the reversal of this harmful executive order. But we need more than a reversal we need lasting protection. That is why we are urging Congress to pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act, bipartisan legislation that restores collective bargaining rights for federal workers.

Every IBEW member has a role to play. Call your representatives on Capitol Hill at (202) 224-3121. Do not know who they are? Visit IBEW43.org and click on the PAC link to find out. Let them know we are watching, and we will not back down

We are strongest when we stand together. One of the greatest strengths of being an IBEW member is knowing your union family has your back. Let us honor that legacy. Let us fight back. And let us protect the rights generations before us fought so hard to win.

Fraternally,

Alan Marzullo
Business Manager/Financial Secretary
